bullet Dual Enrollment:

The purpose of dual enrollment is to enhance a student''s high school education. A dual-enrollment student will not qualify under regular admissions because she/he is not yet a high school graduate.

High school students may concurrently enroll in regularly scheduled RCCC credit or Continuing Education courses under the following conditions:
  bullet
The student must be at least 16 years of age.
  bullet
The student must be recommended by the chief administrative officer of his or her school and approved by the Director of Admissions and President of the community college.
  bullet
The student must take courses at the college level (e.g., no courses may be taken that begin with a 0 such as Math 060). Registration is limited to two courses per semester.
  bullet
The school administrative officer must certify that the student is taking three (3) or more classes in high school (2 if under a block schedule) and is making satisfactory progress towards graduation. For a summer course, the student must have taken at least three (3) high school courses during the preceding semester and cannot be a high school graduate.
bullet Enrollment of high school students cannot displace adult college students.
bullet Students must meet the same prerequisite and course admission requirements as adult college students.

Prior to enrollment, the student must obtain, complete, and return a dual-enrollment form. The form will be signed by the appropriate school administrative officer and be returned to the Admissions office at RCCC for approval of the courses.

For curriculum courses, the student must complete the enrollment process at RCCC. Dual enrollment students must complete all placement testing, COMPASS and Computer Skills, prior to enrollment - even if the course in which the student wishes to enroll does not require a placement testing prerequisite. To take an Internet or Hybrid course, complete the Technical Proficiency Exam in addition to placement testing.

A new dual enrollment form is required prior to each semester for which the student wishes to enroll.

To register for classes, dual enrollment students will meet with a Student Services representative during the last hour of late registration at the North or South Campus. The Student Services representative will verify that the student is qualified for dual enrollment and that the RCCC enrollment process is complete.

After graduation from high school, please complete a new RCCC application indicating your major program of study as a college student.

For curriculum courses, the tuition fee is waived; the student pays applicable fees and is required to purchase their own textbooks. For Continuing Education courses, the cost of courses and fees are not waived.

The dual-enrolled student earns college credit for curriculum courses taken. Each local school board determines if any credit will be granted at the high school.

bullet Huskins Bill Students:

“The purpose of Huskins Bill cooperative programs is to make available for the enrichment of high school students, college level academic, technical, and advanced vocational courses not otherwise available to them…local administrative boards and local school boards may establish cooperative programs in the areas they serve to provide for college courses to be offered to qualified high school students with college credits to be awarded to those high school students upon successful completion of the courses.” NCCCS Curriculum Procedures Reference Manual, Section 14.

At RCCC, students must be in grades 11-12 in order to be considered for participation in the Huskins Bill program. Students must meet the same prerequisites and course admission requirements as adult college students; and the student must be recommended by the chief administrative officer of the high school for enrollment. Generally, students who have achieved a level of academic and social maturity necessary to perform successfully in college credit courses will receive a recommendation. For your schoo'ls specific requirements, please contact your high school guidance office. Qualified students will complete an application for admission, any forms required by your school, and the appropriate RCCC testing.

Students earning a passing grade will earn college credit for the courses taken. The decision to offer high school credit for these courses is the decision of the local school board. There is no tuition cost; applicable fees will be paid by for the student. The student is required to purchase his or her own textbooks for the course.

bullet Intellectually Gifted Students:

The 2001 Session of the NC General Assembly enacted House Bill 1246 that amended Chapter 115D of the General Statutes by adding a new section 115D-1 to allow a student under the age of 16 to enroll in a community college if the President of the college or the President's designee finds that the student is intellectually gifted and has the maturity to justify admission to the college. The State Board has adopted specific criteria for the administration and implementation of this program.

Please contact the RCCC Admissions Office for detailed information about student eligibility, course eligibility, and the required documentation.
