General Information

PURPOSE OF THE COLLEGE
Change in the Mission Statement
Mission

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is an open-door, comprehensive learning-centered institution of higher education serving the citizens of Rowan and Cabarrus counties. The college, a member of the North Carolina Community College System, offers affordable occupational and education programs leading to the Associate in Applied Science Degree and an Arts and Sciences program leading to the Associate in Arts Degree. Diplomas and certificates are awarded for other occupational, adult and continuing education programs. The primary focus of the college’s offerings is on workforce development by meeting the educational needs of the individual and meeting the changing training requirements of business and industrial firms as well as other employers in the service area.

Reflecting its commitment to student learning outcomes,the college strives to inspire adults to increase their knowledge, develop occupational and technical proficiencies, respond to lifelong learning opportunities, and participate as responsible citizens in a democratic society.

Goals

  1. To increase the academic attainment of adult citizens through comprehensive programs of lifelong learning that include the high school level, the one-year diploma level, and the two-year degree level, as well as articulation that facilitates transfer of occupational courses and two-year degrees to four-year institutions.
  2. To increase the occupational and technical skill levels of adult citizens.
  3. To increase the economic development of the area.
  4. To increase the quality of life of adult citizens through personal growth and development.
  5. To increase participation in the democratic process.
RCCC meets its institutional goals through these educational offerings:

  • Specialized occupational education degree programs leading to the Associate in Applied Science Degree and occupational programs leading to certificates and diplomas.
  • Arts and Sciences course offering leading to the Associate in Arts degree.
  • Customized training programs which increase the productivity of employees of existing firms and organizations in the service area and programs which prepare potential employees for new businesses and industries.
  • Adult education and continuing education programs which include literacy skills, English as a Second Language (ESL), the North Carolina High School Equivalency program (GED), and occupational skills courses.
  • Avocational courses and cultural events to enhance the personal growth and development of the citizens of the area.
  • Programs of instruction and student government activities to increase awareness of the democratic process.
Academic Information and Policies
Withdrawal Policy
Change in Drop/Add (Schedule Change) Period
On page 33, the last paragraph of the Withdrawal Policy has been revised as follows:
Courses may be dropped and/or added at any time during the schedule change period (first two days of the semester). Courses dropped on or before the 10% point of the semester will not appear on the student’s record. See the Academic Calendar in the front of this catalog for specific dates.

Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology (Major Code:  D35100)
Change in Suggested Program of Study:
The MAT 101 under Fall Semester should be General Education Course and the ENG 102 under Spring Semester should be ENG 102 or COM 110 or COM 231 (page 138)
Associate Degree Nursing (Major Code: A45100)
Change in Admission Requirements:
On page 139, #2 (in bold) is replaced with the following:
Sign and submit to the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Admissions Office the “Statement of Understanding Regarding Acceptance for Clinical Training” form pertaining to submission of a required criminal history report and mandatory drug screen. (form is provided during the Admission Seminar). Students with a misdemeanor or felony history should forward their criminal background history report to the Director of Nursing Education in a sealed envelope (please write the initials “CBC” on the envelope) . The sealed report will be forwarded to the clinical affiliate for review. The decision for participation in clinical practice will be determined by the clinical affiliate and communicated to the applicant by the Director of Nursing Education.
Associate Degree Nursing (Major Code: A45100)
Change in Admission Requirements:
Completion Program for the Licensed Practical Nurse
On page 145, #3 & #4 (in bold) have been added as follows:
The LPN admitted to this program:
1.
will document current unrestricted licensure as an LPN in the state of North Carolina.
2.
will have met the current admissions criteria required of the Associate Degree Nursing program.
3.
will take the “GAP” competency assessment test and score at or above the national passing standard.
4.
will perform satisfactorily a lab skills assessment to validate competency (Evaluation criteria will be made available. Directives for the “GAP” competency assessment test and lab skills performance will be provided).
5.
will have successfully completed (77% competency level) ACA 118*, BIO 168, and PSY 150.
6.
will be certified in IV therapy and will provide evidence of current IV therapy administration (within the last 12 months). IV certification is available through RCCC’s (Continuing Education Department).
7.
will have had six months of full-time work experience within the last 12 months in the role of LPN. Verification of employment, role and responsibilities are required by the LPN’s employer. Same year graduates of the RCCC practical nursing program will be required to have 3 months of full-time work experience as an LPN.

Change in General Education Course Requirement:
On page 150, SPA 111 listed under General Education Courses should be replaced with Humanities/Fine Arts elective.
Basic Law Enforcement Training
(Major Code: C55120)

Additional Hours:
On page 153, the total contact hours is listed as 608. Effective Spring Semester 2006, the lecture hours will increase from 8 to 9, the lab hours will remain at 30, and the total contact hours will increase from 608 to 624. Also, in order to better serve our students, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has increased the hours in some topical areas of the Basic Law Enforcement Training course above the minimum 624 hours required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training & Standards.
Business Administration (Major Code: A25120)
Change in credit hours:
On page 156, the total credit hours for COE 111 Co-op Work Experience I should be 1 instead of 2.

COS 223 Contemporary Hair Coloring

This course covers basic color concepts, hair coloring problems, and application techniques. Topics include color theory, terminology, contemporary techniques, product knowledge, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to identify a client’s color needs and safely and competently perform color applications and correct problems.
Prerequisites: COS 111 and COS 112
Corequisites: None
COS 240 Contemporary Design
Spring Day

1 class hour; 3 lab hours; 2 credit hours

This course covers methods and techniques for contemporary designs. Emphasis is placed on contemporary designs and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate and apply techniques associated with contemporary design.

CTS 080 Computing Fundamentals

This course covers fundamental functions and operations of the computer. Topics include identification of components and basic computer operations including introduction to operating systems, the Internet, web browsers, and communication using World Wide Web. Upon completion, students should be able to operate computers, access files, print documents and perform basic applications operations.
