Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has named Ira
Henschel the 2007-08
Cooperative Education Student of the Year.
Henschel
has earned an associate degree in Electronics Engineering
Technology and graduated May 10. During the spring 2008 semester,
through RCCC's cooperative education (co-op) program, Henschel
worked for Southern Co., at its Rowan plant.
Southern Co., owns and operates energy-producing plants in
multiple Southeast states. While working as a co-op student,
Henschel preformed a number of operations using specialized
software and tools. He learned about the plant's operations
and provided oral reports to management on a monthly basis.
He also maintained a stockroom, pulled fiber-optic cable
and disassembled an old control room. ... click

Rowan-Cabarrus
Community College has named Mallory Cooper of
Salisbury its 2006-07 Cooperative Education Student
of the Year.
Cooper has earned
an associate degree in criminal justice technology and
will graduate June 2. She completed her first cooperative
education (co-op) placement with the Cabarrus County
Sheriff’s Office. The Stonewall
Jackson Training School of the N.C. State Government Internship
Program provided Cooper with her second co-op placement.
Cooper will pursue
a bachelor’s degree
in criminal justice-law enforcement at UNC-Wilmington. She
will begin classes there in August. |

Sherry
M. Thomas was selected the 2005-2006 RCCC Co-op Student
of the Year. Sherry participated in the
Co-op program Summer Term, 2006 at Rowan Regional Medical
Center. Sherry was responsible for patient care,
transporting patients for testing and admissions, blood
labwork, EKGs, catherizations, vital signs and assisted
doctors and nurses. After graduating from RCCC in
May, 2006, she accepted a full-time position as a Registered
Nurse in the Telemetry Department with Stanly Regional
Medical Center. Sherry was also recognized as the
2005-2006 RCCC Nursing Student of the Year. Congratulations
Sherry!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Stephen
E. Ferris!
(RCCC's 2004-2005 Co-op Student of the Year)
Stephen will complete an Associate of Applied Science degree
in Industrial Engineering in August, 2005. Stephen was on
Co-op assignment with Southeast Hydroblasting, Inc. (a hazardous
waste cleaning company) in Landis for Spring Semester, 2005.
Stephen had worked at the company for a couple of years as
an equipment operator but through the Co-op program he was
given new responsibilities of job safety analysis and doing
accident investigations. While on co-op assignment, Stephen
has been on projects as diverse as asbestos remediation and
removal; fossil fuel power plan cleanup and involved in supervising
a clean-up team for a boiler explosion. Stephen states that
the Co-op program helped confirm a career interest and a
springboard into a challenging career. Stephen will begin
a full-time job with Southeast Hydroblasting when he completes
his degree requirements July 27, 2005. At Rowan-Cabarrus
Community College, Stephen is a member of Phi Theta Kappa
and was selected the 2005 Industrial Engineering Outstanding
Student. Stephen is married and the father of two sons.

Congratulations to Jon Higgins for
receiving a Co-op Scholarship in the amount of
$100.00 to assist with his tuition. Jon is
enrolled in the Electronics/Electronics Technology Program.
Jon co-oped two semesters with Ameristeel. |

Jerome Alexander, an Electronics
Engineering student at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College,
was named the 2004 North Carolina Cooperative Education
Student of the Year.
Jerome co-oped one
semester with NorthEast Medical Center and he is presently
doing his second co-op assignment with Verizon Wireless. Jerome
has accepted a full-time position with Verizon. |

Charlie Derrick, Co-op Director,
was named the 2004 Jon A. Young Service Award winner
for outstanding and distinguished contributions to the mission
and goals of Cooperative Education. |
