School Equivalency Program (GED): |

Adults
who have not completed their high school education
can prepare for the General Education Development Test
(GED). This test enables an adult to demonstrate his/her
general education competencies and be awarded a North
Carolina Equivalency Diploma. The GED diploma is nationally
recognized and accepted as equivalent to a traditional
high school diploma. Instruction is provided, at no
cost to the student, in social studies, science,
literature, mathematics, and writing skills. Students
needing help in basic reading and math skills are placed
in the ABE lab prior to entering the GED class.
A testing fee
of $7.50 is required.

| Compensatory
Education (CED): |
|
Compensatory
Education is a community college program designed specifically
for adults with mental retardation. The purpose of
the program is to compensate adults with developmental disabilities
for the lack of, or inadequate, education received earlier. The
focus of the Compensatory Education Program is on helping
the individual become as independent as possible through
acquiring basic and life skills needed to function successfully
in daily living.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible to participate in the Compensatory Education
Program, an individual must be 17 or older, and (a)
diagnosed with mental retardation or (b) functioning
on a level equivalent to mental retardation resulting
from head injury or brain damage.

no cost to the student and are currently held at Rowan

| Adult Basic Education
(ABE): |
|
Adult
Basic Education (ABE) is a program of instruction designed
for adults who lack competence in reading, writing, speaking,
problem-solving, or computation at a level necessary
to function in society, on a job or in the family. Instruction
is free. Students must take a placement test prior to
enrollment. Upon completion of the ABE program, students are
encouraged to enroll in the GED program.

|
GED “On-Line” program offers courses for
GED preparation. A student needs a computer with Internet
access, basic computer/Internet knowledge and the time
and self-discipline to study consistently. The online
program is free. A placement test is required for enrollment
and can be scheduled by calling 704-216-3502.

| Prerequisite for
ABE/GED Programs: |

Prior to class enrollment, students must meet the following
requirements:
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old. Minors (age
16 – 18) may be enrolled on a “space available” basis
only and with Dean approval. Call for details.
- Call “Pre-College Studies” office
and indicate your desire to take the GED placement
exam. This exam will determine the level of
course preparation needed to pass the GED exam. The
number for Pre-College Studies is 704-216-3510 (North
Campus) or 704-216-3742 (South Campus)
- Placement Exams are offered on Monday’s @ 9:00
am or 6:00 pm. Be sure to call ahead of time.

as a Second Language (ESL): |
|
ESL classes
are designed especially for adults whose native language
is not English. Instruction is offered in listening, speaking,
reading, and writing in English. Both open-entry / open-exit
classes and more traditionally structured classes are provided
on campus, in the community, and in workplace settings.
