FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

In 1987, the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission implemented a voluntary certification program for firefighters. This professional qualification program was based on the National  Fire Protection Association’s Standard for Firefighters, NFPA 1001. The original version of NFPA 1001 was issued in 1974, and has been revised a number of times since then.

The Fire and Rescue Commission’s first Firefighter Standard was based on the 1987 version, which was revised by the NFPA in 1992, and again in 1997.

Each year in North Carolina firefighters respond to calls of all types presenting all types of circumstances.  Facing new challenges every day, the firefighters of today must be well trained in the total spectrum of their job. The instructors who deliver training to the 40,000+ firefighters across North Carolina are the critical link in fire fighter training.

This instructional curriculum is intended to assist the training professional in delivering a structured, complete, and consistent training program. Over 8000 hours of development time has been dedicated to the production of this curriculum since its first release, and it will take a continued effort to keep it fine tuned and up-to-date.

As a result of a consistent structured system of training, firefighters can be measured in both a manipulative and cognitive fashion, and certified by the Commission as a firefighter. The challenge is upon each of us as training professionals to insure the firefighters of our state are totally prepared, their job is done in a safe fashion, and the citizens of North Carolina receive the best possible protection.
