The phlebotomy training course is 185 hours in length, divided into 48 hours of lecture and student lab training and 137 hours of clinical experience. Clinical sites include Northeast Medical Center, Rowan Regional Medical Center, the VA Medical Center, Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and Rowan Family Physicians. Topics addressed in the course include circulatory anatomy and physiology, phlebotomist role in the health care system, phlebotomy procedure and responsibilities, routine clinical laboratory tests, various collection techniques and patient characteristics. Students will perform venipunctures on a mechanical arm until competent. Once competency is established venipunctures on a clinical laboratory patient under supervision will be permitted. On successful completion of the objectives, the student will be eligible to apply for a national certification examination given by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
Pre-requisites: a U.S. High School Diploma or GED.
