RED 080 - Introduction to College Reading
This course introduces effective reading and inferential thinking skills in preparation for
RED 090. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, comprehension, and reading strategies.
Upon completion, students should be able to determine main ideas and supporting details,
recognize basic patterns of organization, draw conclusions, and understand vocabulary
in context. This course does not satisfy the developmental reading prerequisite for ENG
111 or ENG 111A. This course is designed to prepare students for college level work and
will not satisfy credit hours for any degree, diploma or certificate program. This course
will not transfer to a four-year institution but will transfer to any of the community
colleges within the N.C. Community College System; however, it will not satisfy any
degree, diploma or certificate requirements at the receiving institution. Credit earned
for this course will only satisfy the prerequisites for entry into a curriculum level course.

RED 090 - Improved College Reading
This course is designed to improve reading and critical thinking skills. Topics include
vocabulary enhancement; extracting implied meaning; analyzing the author’s purpose,
tone, and style; and drawing conclusions and responding to written material. Upon
completion, students should be able to comprehend and analyze college-level reading
material. This course satisfies the developmental reading prerequisite for ENG 111 or
ENG 111A. This course is designed to prepare students for college level work and will
not satisfy credit hours for any degree, diploma or certificate program. This course will
not transfer to a four-year institution but will transfer to any of the community colleges
within the N.C. Community College System; however, it will not satisfy any degree,
diploma or certificate requirements at the receiving institution. Credit earned for this
