IMPORTANT NOTICES
ABOUT STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNTS

(1) External Email Accounts and the RCCC Email System
RCCC email accounts must be used for course communication, as agreed upon by all Internet/Hybrid students within the Student Agreement (included in the online orientation). Student email accounts were implemented in order to achieve consistency for sending and receiving emails between students and instructors, as RCCC cannot service or support accounts from external email providers. In addition, using this internal service reduces the possibility of receiving unsolicited mail, since its database resides on the college's server and mailing lists are not distributed.

So that email addresses are not changed within the courses, the option of editing personal information (phone numbers, street addresses, email address) has been disabled. Students wishing to post this type of information may continue to do so on their personal homepage provided within their Internet/Hybrid course(s). Students will continue to have the ability to change their Blackboard password and setting privacy options within their Internet/Hybrid course(s). For those addresses that have been changed within courses, the Distance Education office will revise the information to list the college email address only.

(2) Forwarding Email
Students are discouraged from forwarding mail from college email accounts to external email accounts. As stated above, RCCC can only guarantee delivery and receipt of messages sent to/from RCCC email accounts. When mail forwarding is used, often the user experiences delivery failure or technical problems.

(3) Logging Into Your Email Account

When checking your RCCC email account, please note that there is a 12 minute time limit for inactivity.  Inactivity does include typing email messages. The system regards "activity" as sending or receiving mail (clicking send or refresh).

If you encounter problems accessing the email login screens or find that you are "kicked out" immediately upon entering your email account, please make sure you are using the required Netscape or Internet Explorer browsers to access the web site.

For example, AOL and Compuserve users will need to connect to the Internet, minimize the ISP window, and then open one of the two required browsers before typing in the web address of http://www.rowancabarrus.edu/email/. You must also follow these instructions to access the Internet/Hybrid courses (per the instructions provided in the Online Orientation and each online course).

If you need assistance or experience problems with your RCCC email account, and the above recommendations do not correct the issue, please contact the Network Services office at 704-216-3577.
