Back to Top of PageLC Call Numbers (Library of Congress Book Classification Number)
All books, videos, CDs, or DVDs are shelved by their Library of Congress classification system number.

Example: JN30 M38 2005 Understanding the European Union by John McCormick

JN30 - The general topic and subtopic of this book. The number 30 is treated as a whole number. Ie: JN30 would be shelved after JN9.

M38 This letter is normally the first letter of the author's last name. McCormick or the first letter of the title if the author is not identifiable. The number following the letter is an author or title designator and it is treated as a decimal number. Therefore a book labeled JN30 M38 would be shelved before a book labeled JN30 M9. Decimal point 38 is smaller than decimal point 9.

2005 Many of the call numbers also list the publication date of the book. Published in 2005.

Calculators
Calculators are available at the Circulation Desk and may be checked out with a library card for use in the LRC and Academic Testing Center (ATC) only.

CDs (Compact Discs)
You can read a CD on any student computer. You cannot write to a CD.

DVDs (Digital Video Discs)

The computers in the LRC do not play DVDs, however, we do have a DVD player at North and South LRCs.

Because DVDs are very expensive (they can cost over $1,000 each set) and their primary use is for classroom instruction, only instructors may check DVDs out and take them out of the LRC. Students may check a DVD out and view it in the LRC at any time.

Exception: Students taking the Humanities 160 Introduction to Film or Humanities 161 Advanced Film Studies and whose name is listed on a class roster at the Circulation Desk may check out class DVDs for a 4 day period.

Back to Top of PageFlash Drives
Flash Drives (or thumb drives) can be inserted into any student PC if their size permits. Flash drives are recommended if you wish to save large files that are too large to be saved on a standard 1.4 MB diskette. Caution: Because of the design of the Gateway computers used in the LRC, the USB ports are placed right beside the case edge. Flash drives whose cases are wider than the USB port may be impeded by the PC case edge and can not be inserted directly into the USB port. Ask at the Circulation Desk for an extension USB cable to connect your flash drive to the USB port on the computer.

Back to Top of PageDoes the LRC have scanners available?
Yes, the LRC has scanners that students can use at both libraries. The scanner is located at PC-18 at LRC-North and PC-11 at LRC-South. There are directions beside the scanners at each location. If you need any help just go to the Circulation Desk and ask.

Back to Top of PageHeadphones
Headphones are available at the Circulation Desk and may be checked out for in LRC use only.

Back to Top of PageMagazines/Periodicals

The Citation Machine will automatically correctly format your citation information in APA or MLA format style.

Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed to assist high school, college, and university students, their teachers, and independent researchers in their effort to respect other people's intellectual properties.
