LC
Call Numbers (Library
of Congress Book Classification Number) |
All books, videos, CDs, or DVDs are shelved by their Library
of Congress classification system number.
Example: JN30 M38 2005 Understanding the European Union by
John McCormick
JN30 - The general topic and subtopic of this
book. The number 30 is treated as a whole number.
Ie: JN30 would be shelved after JN9.
M38 This letter is normally the first letter of
the author's last name. McCormick or the first letter
of the title if the author is not identifiable. The number following
the letter is an author or title designator and it is treated
as a decimal number. Therefore a book labeled JN30
M38 would be shelved before a book labeled JN30 M9. Decimal point
38 is smaller than decimal point 9.
2005 Many of the call numbers also list the publication
date of the book. Published in 2005. |
| |
| Calculators |
| Calculators are available at the Circulation Desk and may be
checked out with a library card for use in the LRC and Academic
Testing Center (ATC) only. |
| |
| CDs (Compact Discs) |
| You can read a CD on any student computer. You cannot write to
a CD. |
| |
| DVDs
(Digital Video Discs) |
The computers in the LRC do not play DVDs, however, we do
have a DVD player at North and South LRCs.
Because DVDs are very expensive (they can cost over $1,000 each
set) and their primary use is for classroom instruction, only instructors may
check DVDs out and take them out of the LRC. Students may check
a DVD out and view it in the LRC at any time.
Exception: Students taking the Humanities 160 Introduction
to Film or Humanities 161 Advanced Film Studies and whose name
is listed on a class roster at the Circulation Desk may check
out class DVDs for a 4 day period. |
| |
Flash Drives |
Flash Drives (or thumb drives) can be inserted into any student
PC if their size permits. Flash drives are recommended if you wish
to save large files that are too large to be saved on a standard
1.4 MB diskette. Caution: Because of the design of the Gateway
computers used in the LRC, the USB ports are placed right beside
the case edge. Flash drives whose cases are wider than the USB
port may be impeded by the PC case edge and can not be inserted
directly into the USB port. Ask at the Circulation Desk for an
extension USB cable to connect your flash drive to the USB port
on the computer. |
| |
Does the LRC have scanners
available? |
Yes, the LRC has scanners that students can use at both libraries.
The scanner is located at PC-18 at LRC-North and PC-11 at LRC-South.
There are directions beside the scanners at each location. If you
need any help just go to the Circulation Desk and ask. |
| |
Headphones |
| Headphones are available at the Circulation Desk and may be checked
out for in LRC use only. |
| |
Magazines/Periodicals |
| Current magazines are shelved alphabetically by title within
their general topic assignment. |
|
|
 |
LRC-North:
Current magazines are shelved by the large windows at the
rear of the LRC. Back issues are shelved alphabetically in
the book stacks behind the Reference Books. |
|
 |
LRC-South: Current magazines
are shelved by the Reference Books and bound magazine collection. |
|
|
| Neither current nor back-volume magazines can be checked out.
They are Reference only within the LRC. |
| |
Printing Costs |
The printer for all student PC printing is located at the Circulation
Desk. You may pick up the copies there for a charge of $0.10 per
page or $0.50 for color printing. We recommend that you check File
menu -> Print Preview before printing. You are responsible for
all pages you print! |
| |
Videos |
Primary use for videos is for classroom instruction, therefore,
videos are checked out only by faculty. Students may check a video
out and view it within the LRC at any time. Exception: Students
taking the Humanities 160 Introduction to Film or Humanities 161
Advanced Film Studies and whose name is listed on a class roster
at the Circulation Desk may check out class videos for a 4 day
period. |
| |
Newspapers |
The LRC subscribes to 16 newspapers with 13 regional papers including The
Charlotte Observer, Independent Tribune, News and Observer, The
Salisbury Post, to name just a few. The three national papers
that the LRC subscribes are USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and The
Washington Post . |
| |
NC LIVE |
NC Live is an online database service that provides thousands
of articles from thousands of journals, magazines, books and
newspapers. This displays the full text of articles that would
be unavailable or very difficult to find in their printed version.
Because the articles are simply electronic copies of the actual
journal, magazine or book, they are equivalent to reading the
original source.
Librarians offer basic course/help on how to use NC Live. RCCC
students, faculty and staff may obtain the username and password
for accessing NC Live from their home computers or anywhere else
off campus. There are three ways that you can receive the password
for NC LIVE: |
| |
|
| 1. |
Come to the
Circulation Desk in the library. |
|
| 2. |
Go to the LRC
homepage and click on the words: Request Remote Password
for NC LIVE and you can request the password by e-mail by
filling out the form on the page. |
|
|
Request

SIRS Publishing |
SIRS is an online service that gathers articles that are pro
or con on controversial topics. Librarians offer basic course/help
on how to use SIRS. Access to SIRS is available on the LRC
home page. Access to SIRS is restricted to authorized personnel
only. Access from any LRC is automatically authorized. RCCC students,
faculty and staff may obtain the username and and password at the
Circulation Desk needed to be able to access SIRS from their home
computer or anywhere else off campus. |
| |
Issues and Controversies |
Issues and Controversies (also known as Facts on File) is
an online service that provides a written summary of a large
number of controversial topics. It provides a background description
of the topic, pro and con arguments, discussion questions & articles,
bibliography and additional sources. Access to Issues and Controversies
is available on the LRC
home page.

Citations |
Citing your sources is a very important part of creating a research
paper. This will protect you from charges of plagiarism. There
are two main citation formats that are commonly used: |
| |
|
MLA |
(Modern Language Association) is used for English and Literature
class papers. |
|
| |
APA |
(American Psychological Association) is used for science class
papers.
|
|

Creating Citations Automatically |
|
|
|
Citing online resources
is a good source describing the proper method of citation
formatting. It can be found on the LRC online Home Page
- left side under Online Research.

|
|
The Citation Machine will automatically correctly format
your citation information in APA or MLA format style.
Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed to assist high
school, college, and university students, their teachers,
and independent researchers in their effort to respect other
people's intellectual properties.

Accessing
the LRC from Home |
You can access the LRC home page and all of the electronic databases
from home or other location if you have a computer with internet
connection. |

1. |
Go to your internet provider window such as Microsoft Internet

from the LRC and are good for the semester. Community
(non-student) patrons may request NCLIVE passwords through

Academic
Testing Center |
The Academic Testing Center simply stores and monitors taking
of tests. Tests are picked up and graded by the instructor at
regular intervals.
Please bring a current picture ID and know your instructor's
name, course name, course number, and course type (ie telecourse,
internet, and academic) when coming to the testing center. All
cell phones and other personal electronic devices (i.e. MP3 players)
must be turned off and remain off while taking a test. Instructor
regulations on each test specify whether you can use your books,
notes, calculators and the length of time allotted for the specifc
test.
If you are a student at another college and need to take a test,
the academic testing center does provide proctoring services.
See the Academic Testing Center
web page for specific guidelines to taking distance education
tests at RCCC. |
