RCCC Announces
Creative Writing Award Winners
 

            SALISBURY, N.C. — Rowan-Cabarrus Community College recognized its 2007 Creative Writing Award winners today during the September Board of Trustees meeting.

            The awards honor gifted students from the English III, Creative Writing I and Advanced Creative Writing classes. Course instructors nominate students who have a keen interest in literature and demonstrate a passion for writing with clarity, expression and purpose.

            Award winners receive a certificate and a $50 prize. The award categories are fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

  For non-fiction:
  bullet “Reflections,” by Milan Nerad, an employee at PGT in Salisbury. His essay is about riding his horse one crisp winter morning.
  bullet “Learning How to Swim,” by Brian Craig, also an employee at PGT in Salisbury. His essay is about participating in a swimming lesson with his son.
     
  For Poetry:
  bullet “Puppet Child,” a brief yet powerful poem by Laura Gray, an arts and sciences student from Cleveland.
  bullet “The Kings of Brunswick County,” by Casey Wagoner, a nursing student from China Grove. A long, epic poem about informal political structures.
     
  For Fiction:
  bullet “Solitaire” and “The Angels: Rage,” both by T.E. Marts, an arts and sciences student from Salisbury. Short scenes and chapters from longer pieces.
