RCCC Accepting Construction Bids
For New North Campus Building

          SALISBURY, N.C. — The Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Board of Trustees approved a recommendation today to begin advertising for bids for the construction of the new 400 Building on the North Campus in Salisbury.

           Trustees accepted the recommendation from the building and grounds committee during the board's August meeting. The two-story, 38,000 square-foot classroom building will feature a dramatic three-story lobby and mark a significant shift in RCCC architecture. The facility will house RCCC's Continuing Education Department; community program facilities; classrooms for art, computer, GED, pre-college and general purpose classes; law enforcement training facilities; a study lounge; and faculty/staff offices.

           Yates-Chreitzberg-Hughes Architects of Concord, N.C., is designing the building, the first new facility constructed on RCCC's North Campus in more than 30 years. Construction is scheduled to start on Building 400 in late 2008, with approximately a year needed to complete the project. Building costs will be paid for with funds from the state (roughly 59 percent) and Rowan County.

           In other business, the board recognized and thanked National Starch and Chemical Co., for a $2,500 contribution to the RCCC Foundation. The gift will be added to an endowed scholarship fund established by the company in 1990. Since then, National Starch and Chemical has made annual contributions to the fund, which currently holds $57,000. The fund has assisted 18 students with $1,000 scholarships since its creation.

           RCCC President Carol Spalding gave her first report to the Board of Trustees. Spalding began her tenure as RCCC president on Aug. 11. Since her first day at RCCC, Spalding has kept a busy schedule, with at least 17 different internal and external meetings, presentations and appearances.

           Spalding reported that Robert Misenheimer, mayor of Kannapolis, has been re-appointed to the board of trustees by N.C. Gov. Mike Easley. Misenheimer's four-year appointment will run through June 2012. He joined the board last February, completing the term of Edward Norvell of Salisbury.

           Spalding completed her report by announcing two upcoming events. On Sept. 30, the college, with support from Castle and Cooke Inc., will host a reception in honor of Spalding, at the North Carolina Research Campus. On Oct. 20, the RCCC Foundation will hold its 2008 Golf Classic at The Club at Irish Creek, in Kannapolis. The registration deadline to play in the tournament is Sept. 30.            Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is a comprehensive, community-based institution of higher learning, serving the citizens of Rowan and Cabarrus Counties.
